SAT SAT 07:30 I Found a Tenor: Richard Tauber Revived b03ffkfq (Listen) SAT As he prepares to perform operetta for the first time, SAT comedian and entertainer Bernie Clifton explores the impact SAT of Austrian Tenor Richard Tauber, the man who inspired him SAT to return to the stage as a singer. SAT Bernie Clifton began his career singing with a dance band SAT before cutting his teeth as a comedian on the northern club SAT circuit. Famous for riding an ostrich and other outrageous SAT props, Clifton became a regular face on television in the SAT 70's and 80's, appearing on The Lulu Show, The Good Old Days SAT and presenting Crackerjack. SAT A few years ago Clifton toyed with the idea of returning to SAT the stage as a serious singer and, although his roots lay in SAT Dance Band music, it was rediscovering the voice of Richard SAT Tauber that inspired a new passion in him to perform SAT operetta. SAT Tauber, acclaimed as one of the greatest singers of the 20th SAT century was a favourite in the Clifton family home and the SAT young Bernie was regularly exposed to his music. As the SAT decades passed by, Tauber's songs including the classics 'My SAT Heart and I' and 'You Are My Heart's Desire' were almost SAT forgotten until Clifton purchased an album of recordings. SAT One atmospheric night he relived them and they revived some SAT wonderful memories and motivated a new career ambition. SAT In this programme we join Clifton preparing for a special SAT evening of Viennese music where he'll perform songs before SAT an audience in the Tauber style with The National Concert SAT Orchestra. SAT He trains his voice at the Royal Northern College of Music SAT under the tutorship of the celebrated tenor David Maxwell SAT Anderson, visits Tauber landmarks in London and meets Tauber SAT enthusiast Bernard Keeffe, the Chairman of the SAT Anglo-Austrian Music Society. SAT Stanley Holloway was born in 1890 and died in 1982. SAT Launched in 1952 on the BBC Home Service, Frankly Speaking SAT was a novel, ground breaking series. Unrehearsed and SAT unscripted, the traditional interviewee/interviewer pairing SAT was initially jettisoned for three interviewers firing SAT direct questions. Early critics described it as 'unkempt', SAT 'an inquisition' and described the guest as prey being SAT cornered, quarry being pursued - with calls to axe the SAT unscripted interview. But the format won out and eventually SAT won over its detractors. SUN Narrated by her daughter Nora Brooks Blakely, this is SUN portrait features friends and fellow poets - including Sonia SUN Sanchez and Haki Madhubuti. SUN Publishing her first poem at 13 - when she hit 16, Gwendolyn SUN was publishing in newspapers serving Chicago's black SUN population. Early critics welcomed her as 'a real poet SUN writing poignant social documents.' SUN Her poems are portraits of ordinary people she observed SUN day-to-day. She moulded them into memorable characters like SUN Annie Allen, Rudolph Reed and Satin Legs Smith. Her deepest SUN compassion though was for young people, particularly SUN struggling youth. Her most famous poem, We Real Cool, is SUN about children skipping school - still spoken aloud today by SUN children who learn it by heart. SUN Brooks believed she had a social and political role as a SUN poet and became one of the most visible articulators of the SUN "black aesthetic" as the Black Arts Movement took off in the SUN late 1960s. Her commitment to nurturing black literature led SUN her to leave major publisher Harper & Row in favour of a SUN fledgling black company. When she was appointed poet SUN laureate of Illinois in 1968, she used her role to visit SUN schools, prisons, and rehabilitation centres to help people SUN 'see the poetry in their lives.' She always claimed her SUN greatest achievement was teaching people that poetry isn't a SUN formal activity but an art form within the reach of SUN everybody. Starring Frank THU Skinner and Katherine Parkinson. THU Don't Start is a scripted comedy with a deceptively simple THU premise - an argument. Each week, our couple fall out over THU another apparently trivial flashpoint. Each week, the stakes THU mount as Neil and Kim battle with words. But these are no THU ordinary arguments. The two outdo each other with THU increasingly absurd images, unexpected literary references THU and razor sharp analysis of their beloved's weaknesses. THU Underneath the cutting wit, however, there is an THU unmistakable tenderness. THU In this episode, The Bath, cardamon scented candles, THU kumquats and a debate over the virtues of shared bathing THU compared to shared showering occupy Neil and Kim. THU The first two series of Don't Start met with instant THU critical acclaim: THU "That he can deliver such a heavy premise for a series with THU such a lightness of touch is testament to his skills as a THU writer and, given that the protagonists are both bookworms, THU he's also permitted to use a flourish of fine words that THU would be lost in his stand-up routines." Jane Anderson, THU Radio Times THU "Frank Skinner gives full rein to his sharp but splenetic THU comedy.
