SAT SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 b044b3lj (Listen) SAT The Benjamin Broadcasts SAT The German-Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin is best known SAT as the author of seminal texts such as "The Work of Art in SAT the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" and for his influence on SAT Theodor Adorno and the SAT "Frankfurt School" of philosophy. But behind the SAT much-mythologised figure of Benjamin the philosopher, there SAT lies the little-known historical reality of Benjamin the SAT broadcaster... SAT When the Gestapo stormed Walter Benjamin's last apartment in SAT 1940, they stumbled upon a cache of papers which the fleeing SAT philosopher had abandoned in his hurry to escape Paris. SAT Amongst these papers were the scripts for an extraordinary SAT series of radio broadcasts for children covering everything SAT from toy collecting to the politics of tenement housing, SAT from the psychology of witch hunts to human responses to SAT natural catastrophes. Designed to encourage young listeners SAT to think critically, to question sources and to challenge SAT clich├ęs, Benjamin's broadcasts stand in stark contrast to SAT the fascist propaganda which would come to take their place. SAT Benjamin committed suicide in 1940, when his flight out of SAT Europe was blocked at the Spanish border. He died believing SAT that most - if not all - of his writings were lost. SAT Here Radio4 listeners have an exclusive chance to discover SAT them in this Archive on Four documentary presented by SAT Michael Rosen, and with Henry Goodman as the voice of Walter SAT Benjamin. It's the first ever English recreation of his SAT pre-war broadcasts to children. SAT Producer: Kate Schneider SAT A Made in Manchester Production for BBC Radio 4. SAT SAT 12:00 Sarah Woods - My Life With Flu b04n61gy (Listen) SAT A love story, about flu. SAT It's January 1969, the winter after the summer of love, and SAT as Jill and David's relationship blossoms, a new and deadly SAT virus emerges - Hong Kong Flu. Little do the young lovers SAT know SAT that this virus will have a profound influence over the SAT course of their lives, as it travels from person to person, SAT from sneeze to sneeze - an evolving act of chance that will SAT kill millions of people over the next forty-five years. SAT My Life with Flu has been produced in collaboration with the SAT Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. In five episodes it follows SAT the story of Jill across five decades as she struggles with SAT the highs and lows of life, love and viral infection. At the SAT same time the story tracks the life of Hong Kong Flu - how, SAT over 45 years, it has traversed the globe, evolved and is SAT ultimately being superseded by new, more virulent strains, SAT such as Swine Flu. SAT Using cutting edge science - of transmission, viral SAT evolution and genetic predisposition - it tells the story of SAT flu, and investigates the unique qualities of Jill's genome SAT which make her a 'severe responder'. Paul Kellam, Virus SAT Genomics team leader at the Sanger Institute worked closely SAT with writer Sarah Woods to weave the science seamlessly into SAT the story. SAT The drama underlines the deep connection human beings have SAT to the viruses that survive through us, and how illness can SAT shape the course of our lives. SAT Jill.... By Douglas Adams. From SAT April 1978. SAT Arthur Dent is one of only two survivors from Earth, SAT demolished to make way for a SAT by-pass. He survived thanks to his friend, Ford Prefect (who SAT hails not from Guildford, but somewhere near Betelgeuse), a SAT writer for the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, "the most SAT successful book ever to have come out of the great SAT publishing corporations of Ursa Minor". Now paired with SAT fellow Earth survivor Trillian and duplicitous two-headed SAT hustler Zaphod Beeblebrox, Arthur and Ford were on the SAT legendary planet Magrathea when the Galactic Police attacked SAT them and an explosion occurred - they find themselves in a SAT restaurant with a rather sensational selling point. SAT The global multi-media success story that is "Hitchhiker's" SAT started life as a Radio 4 series in March 1978. The original SAT scripts by the late Douglas Adams then went on to spawn a SAT series of novels, a feature film, at least three stage SAT shows, a TV series, a computer game, a collection of comic SAT books - and various towels. SAT Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge and died in 2001 at the SAT age of 49. He suffered a fatal heart attack after working SAT out at his gym in California. SAT With Peter Jones, Simon Jones, Geoffrey McGivern, Mark SAT Wing-Davey and Stephen Moore. Produced by the late Geoffrey SAT Perkins. SUN Ioan Meredith, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Fenella Fielding, and SUN Janet Maw star in Wolfgang Borchert's play set in the winter SUN of 1946. SUN Corporal Beckmann, only just returned from the Eastern Front SUN to find his wife in bed with another man, is about to jump SUN into the frozen River Elbe. THU 3/6: In this third edition of the THU fourth series we get updates from some ongoing political THU negotiations; witness an awkward encounter at an interfaith THU conference; and hear a curious tale of a young man who heads THU to Canada to win the respect of his father. THU The first series of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme was THU described as "sparklingly clever" by The Daily Telegraph and THU "one of the most consistently funny sketch shows for quite THU some time" by The Guardian. The second series won Best Radio THU Comedy at both the Chortle and Comedy.co.uk awards, and was THU nominated for a Radio Academy award. The third series THU actually won a Radio Academy award. THU In this fourth series, John has written more sketches, like THU the sketches from the other series. Not so much like them THU that they feel stale and repetitious; but on the other hand THU not so different that it feels like a misguided attempt to THU completely change the show. THU THU 17:00 Ballylenon b00yqtqm (Listen) THU Series 8, Crime Fiction THU Ballylenon, County Donegal. Pop. 1,999 was founded by St THU Lenon of Padua, when he fell into the river at this spot in THU 953. Ballylenon is situated on the shores of Lough Swilly THU with entrancing views of Muckish THU Mountain, in the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe. (Note: THU Ballylenon is a fictional name, but the other landmarks are THU identifiable.) THU In this society, there exists an uneasy balance of THU interests. Communication has all the appearances of power, THU and in Ballylenon, communication means the local Telephone THU Exchange and Post Office. Both these are firmly in the THU control of sisters, Vera and Muriel McConkey, who in cahoots THU with hotelier and funeral undertaker, Phonsie Doherty, would THU seek to rule the roost in Ballylenon. However, other forces THU have their own guiding principles, and where the McConkey THU sisters and Mr Doherty, aided by The Vindicator, would THU dominate reactionary thinking, a dangerous liberal tendency THU is championed by Vivienne and Rev. Samuel Hawthorne, and the THU somewhat unlikely, Guard Gallagher. The antagonism between THU these camps is only ever thinly veiled. THU In this brand new series, Christopher Fitz-Simon takes a THU jocose but jaundiced look at 1960's Ireland, where we THU discover THU Muriel McConachie , 62. Spinster remnant of a family once THU active in politics, Muriel inherited the corner shop and, THU due to her Councillor father's influence, has the Post THU Office franchise. Known as the eyes of Ballylenon, Muriel, THU the Honouree Secretary of the Development Association, has a THU long-term 'understanding' with its Chair, Phonsie Doherty. THU She is a gentle personality, but misses nothing and can see THU a midge on a mare's arse in Tyrone. THU We also discover, Vera McConachie, 61, Muriel's younger and THU more forthright spinster sister who runs the 10-line manual THU Telephone Exchange and is known as the Ears of Ballylenon. THU Every call goes through her switchboard, its content noted, THU discussed and any necessary action taken. She also writes THU the Horoscope anonymously for the Donegal Vindicator. THU The McConkey's closest confidant is Phonsie [Alphonsus] THU Doherty. 58. Phonsie is a widower, proprietor of the Swilly THU Arms Hotel and of Doherty's Estate Agency and Funeral THU Furnishers and Chair of the Development Association. Up to THU the present is politically 'in' and therefore in the way of THU knowing what grants and subsidies are available for all THU manner of projects. His relationship with Muriel McConachie THU is proprietorial rather than romantic. THU If there is a thorn in the side of this trio it is, Vivienne THU Hawthorne, 30, the former Miss Boal. Bright, breezy, busy THU primary schoolteacher. Organist and choir-mistress of the THU Presbyterian congregation. Though seemingly rationalist, THU Vivienne is secretly much influenced by horoscopes. She is THU supporter of cultural causes like the music festival and THU architectural conservation. And though apparently THU straightforward, she achieves certain aims by devious means.
