SAT asks Stephen Fry in this intimate portrait of the most SAT important part of speech. SAT Evolutionary biologists can't agree whether the complexities SAT of eating and speaking are linked. But the evolution of the SAT mouth is important. It date stamps the start of language and SAT of modern humanity. As soon as we had the equipment to SAT speak, we started, for example, to make art. We hear from a SAT lipreader, who explains why we all hear mouths with our SAT eyes. Ventriloquist Nina Conti explains how she has learned SAT to over-rule the automatic functions of her mouth. A facial SAT surgeon gives us the tour of the inside of the mouth and a SAT psychologist discusses humanity's earliest form of happy SAT oral communication - or language. The smile. But are smiles SAT conscious or unconscious? The psychologist and the lipreader SAT also explain what distinguishes English mouths. And it's not SAT the stiff upper lip. SAT The programme gives us key information about the development SAT of language. The human mouth's structure is unique among SAT primates. If chimpanzee or neanderthal mouths had developed SAT the same physical structure, would they be able to speak? SAT The answer comes with the help of a monkey, interviewed by SAT Stephen in the studio. He just happened to come along with SAT Nina Conti. SAT SAT 09:00 Clowning Around on 4 Extra b03xcl02 (Listen) SAT Tony Lidington traces the role of the clown in British SAT humour, from the Great Grimaldi through stars of circus, SAT pantomime and pierrots, to modern entertainers and even SAT activists. SAT Drawing on his own performances, BBC archive and SAT contemporary experts, Tony traces the clown's evolution from SAT Shakespeare's plays, whose rustic clowns and court fools SAT could speak uncomfortable truths to those in power. He SAT recreates the role of "the Great Grimaldi", whose panto SAT clown became the most popular entertainment of Regency SAT London and defined the clown's image for generations to SAT come. Light is also cast on the popular 19th century SAT travelling circuses, the enormous appeal of pantos and SAT harlequinades and the successful careers - and often SAT tragically short lives - of entertainers like Dan Leno, once SAT hailed as "the funniest man in the world". SAT The days of organized leisure time for working people and SAT the growth of the middle class produced new diversions and SAT the era of mass entertainment. White-clad Pierrot troupes SAT entertained visitors at seaside resorts and troops abroad as SAT Britain descended into two World Wars. The tradition of SAT physical theatre and anarchic comedy clowning continued in SAT the latter half of the 20th century, with The Goon Show and SAT characters like Professor Wallofski, created by Max Wall. MON The films of Orson Welles, such as 'Citizen Kane', 'The MON Magnificent Ambersons' and 'Touch of Evil' guaranteed his MON place in the pantheon of silver-screen heroes. MON In the celebrated 1949 film adaptation of Graham Greene's MON novel 'The Third Man', Harry Lime is introduce as one of MON cinema's most notorious anti-heroes. Sought in post-war MON Vienna by pulp writer Holly Martins [Joseph Cotton] and MON British Army Major Calloway [Trevor Howard], Lime manages to MON steal the show despite being absent for much of it! MON This 1951-52 radio prequel to the film, 'The Lives of Harry MON Lime' earned Welles even more acclaim. MON MON 06:30 Li Yuan-Chia b00pcf5j (Listen) MON When Taiwan's first abstract artist settled in a Cumbrian MON farmhouse, his life changed. Deriving inspiration from MON landscape and local people, he encouraged new British MON artists and anticipated the success of contemporary Chinese MON visual art. MON Li Yuan Chia was one of the first significant Chinese MON abstract artists of the 20th century. This programme, MON presented by Sally Lai, the director of Manchester's Chinese MON Arts Centre, examines his career from the place he spent the MON last 28 years of his life: a stone farmhouse, built next to MON Hadrian's Wall in Cumbria. MON Born in China in 1929, Li was educated in Taiwan. He worked MON and exhibited in Italy before moving to London in 1963. MON Here, Li's reputation was established with monochrome MON paintings and scrolls marked with a tiny, isolated dot. MON But Li came to dislike the fashionable metropolitan art MON world of the mid-1960s. In 1968 he met Cumbrian painter MON Winifred Nicholson, who persuaded Li to move away from the MON busy capital to a far more remote location, near her own MON home. With his own hands Li then set about converting a farm MON building, the Banks, at Brampton, where he built a gallery, MON library, theatre, printing press, children's art room and MON photographic darkroom, and opened it to the public. It MON became a popular attraction for local people, art MON aficionados and tourists walking Hadrian's Wall. MON Over the next ten years over 300 artists exhibited at the MON Banks, which was also the base from which Li's organisation, MON the LYC Foundation, was able to commission work by young MON British artists, some of whom became very successful later, MON including sculptors and land artists Andy Goldsworthy, David MON Nash and Bill Woodrow. MON Li's own work moved into abstract sculpture, using magnets, MON gold leaf, plastic discs suspended on plastic thread and MON additional text. The landscape also affected him, and he MON began to explore photography and environmental art. Always, MON he wrote poetry. MON But after Arts Council funding became increasingly limited, MON the LYC Foundation had to struggle to survive. Li continued MON to produce art, which became increasingly contemplative. He MON fell ill with cancer and died in 1994. Art historians now MON acknowledge Li Yuan Chia as having paved the way for the MON current expansion of Chinese contemporary art. But his MON former home in Cumbria is derelict. WED Starring Orson Welles as Harry Lime. WED The films of Orson Welles, such as 'Citizen Kane', 'The WED Magnificent Ambersons' and 'Touch of Evil' guaranteed his WED place in the pantheon of silver-screen heroes. Sought in post-war WED Vienna by pulp writer Holly Martins [Joseph Cotton] and WED British Army Major Calloway [Trevor Howard], Lime manages to WED steal the show despite being absent for much of it! WED This radio prequel to the film, 'The Lives of Harry Lime' WED earned Welles even more acclaim. His distinctive tones had WED already served him well as the radio voice of 'The Shadow' WED between 1937 and 1938, where he portrayed the crusader with WED distinctly questionable means of thwarting crime. WED Stripped of the film cameras, the character of Harry Lime is WED not ameliorated for this radio outing. He's an out and out WED rogue. Where do our ideas WED about beauty come from? How is our life-experience affected WED by how we look? WED When Erin was growing up she was convinced she was ugly. She WED would dart across the road diagonally so she wouldn't draw WED attention to her nose by crossing in front of stationary WED cars. She was so self-conscious about her flat-chest that WED she would regularly wear two padded bras. WED But one day she was told she was beautiful, scooped up by WED the modelling industry and presented as the uber-elegant WED catwalk queen, sought after and richly rewarded. WED What did they see in her that she would never have seen in WED herself? Beauty? WED With the help of renowned facial-reconstructive surgeon WED Professor Iain Hutchison, who has treated people with severe WED facial disfigurement; and Professor of Children's WED Literature, Kim Reynolds who has studied the way beauty is WED regarded in traditional stories, Erin explores various WED opinions and experiences of beauty. WED Erin also goes behind the scenes at London Fashion Week, to WED an event called 'All Walks Beyond the Catwalk'; it used a WED wide range of models - both in size and age - as a way to WED broaden the range of catwalk models used at such influential WED events. But have you ever thought WED about the economics that has made your addiction possible? WED Who does it profit? And would you want to make some canny WED investments that take advantage of our human weaknesses? WED In this series, Simon Evans looks at the economics, history WED and health issues behind these oh-so-addictive commodities. WED This week it's sugar. Some people say sugar could be the new WED tobacco - exposed as a health risk that's been knowingly WED concealed for decades. And the trouble is sugar is in almost WED everything now - even things that 'look' savoury. What part WED does economics have to play in how we have got to this WED point? How do we make sense of what the food industry is WED doing with sugar? And if we want to invest in this WED addiction, how do we do it? WED With the help of economics guru, More Or Less host Tim WED Harford and the Queen of investment know-how, Merryn WED Somerset Webb, plus author David Gillespie, Simon walks us WED around the economics of this very familiar commodity and WED pokes fun at our relationship with it. WED The last voyages of Jonathan Swift's story are the lesser WED told. So he is pleased to make the WED acquaintance of Tom over lunch. WED The episode of Westlake they are filming this week sees the WED Detective investigating the death of a woman who the viewer WED only ever sees as a figure in a portrait. Tom is the artist WED that painted the portrait. WED In one scene the actor playing the model's husband slashes WED at the portrait. Tom flinches; it's clear from his reaction WED that the painting means something more to him than being WED just a cog in a make-believe story. And when the loud mouth WED star of the show makes a crude comment about the model WED between takes, it's too much for Tom to take, and all hell WED breaks loose. Andrew is intrigued by Tom's apparent WED obsession with the model and begins to imagine all kinds of WED possibilities for this beguiling portrait. WED Producer: Sarah Langan. FRI Starring Orson Welles as Harry Lime. FRI The films of Orson Welles, such as 'Citizen Kane', 'The FRI Magnificent Ambersons' and 'Touch of Evil' guaranteed his FRI place in the pantheon of silver-screen heroes. FRI In the celebrated 1949 film adaptation of Graham Greene's FRI novel 'The Third Man', Harry Lime is introduce as one of FRI cinema's most notorious anti-heroes. Sought in post-war FRI Vienna by pulp writer Holly Martins [Joseph Cotton] and FRI British Army Major Calloway [Trevor Howard], Lime manages to FRI steal the show despite being absent for much of it! FRI This radio prequel to the film, 'The Lives of Harry Lime' FRI earned Welles even more acclaim. His distinctive tones had FRI already served him well as the radio voice of 'The Shadow' FRI between 1937 and 1938, where he portrayed the crusader with FRI distinctly questionable means of thwarting crime. FRI Stripped of the film cameras, the character of Harry Lime is FRI not ameliorated for this radio outing. He's an out and out FRI rogue. Lime made it to the airwaves thanks to another Harry FRI - Harry Alan Towers, with whom Welles collaborated on 'The FRI Black Museum'. Like its eponymous anti-hero, this series FRI travelled widely, being syndicated across the USA and on FRI Radio Luxembourg. FRI The music is by Anton Karas, the zither man. FRI Produced by Towers of London. FRI First broadcast on the BBC Light Programme in August 1951. FRI FRI 06:30 Percy Edwards Showdown b00htwx7 (Listen) FRI David Attenborough hosts a celebration of bird impersonator FRI Percy Edwards, who enjoyed a 70-year career impersonating FRI birds and beasts. The programme combines the strange story FRI of Percy's life with archive of his impersonations, FRI interviews with those who knew him and a quiz. Guests FRI include Bill Oddie and the comedian Alex Horne. FRI Percy Edwards discovered his talent for talking like animals FRI when he was seven. Dozing under a tree, he heard what he FRI thought was a wolf-whistle and discovered that it was a FRI bird. For several weeks, Edwards kept hearing this FRI greenfinch and found that he could imitate it. He even took FRI to eating canary seed before going to bed in the hope that FRI he would wake in the morning singing like a bird. FRI Eventually Percy was able to produce the sound of more than FRI 600 birds, and some other animals. His was the voice of the FRI killer whale in Orca, the alien in Alien and he provided FRI sheep noises for Kate Bush's song The Dreaming. FRI Percy took to the stage aged 11, was a stalwart of the FRI Generation Game in the 1970s and gave his final performance FRI aged 80 at the London Palladium in 1989. His repertoire was FRI extraordinary - all 13 calls of the chaffinch, the strangely FRI grinding sound of the amorous capercaille and corgis barking FRI in Welsh accents. FRI Quizmaster David Attenborough plays bird calls for the teams FRI to identify, some of which will not be the birds but Percy's FRI impressions - can they tell the difference? Woven into the FRI rounds will be snippets about Percy's life from the BBC FRI archive, including appearances on Parkinson, Wogan and FRI Morecambe and Wise, revealing the importance of his work in FRI raising the public's awareness of wildlife and the FRI significance of his role as an ornithologist. FRI This week linguistic brainbox Natalie Haynes and poet FRI Michael Rosen vie for wordy supremacy with comedians Arthur FRI Smith and Paul Sinha. FRI Gyles is the longest-serving wordsmith in Countdown's FRI Dictionary Corner and the author of numerous wordplay books. FRI But now it's time for him to encourage other people to show FRI off their knowledge of words and playfulness with language. FRI Wordaholics is clever, intelligent, witty and unexpected. We visit Bunhill FRI Cemetery in London with writer Kevin Jackson to enjoy the FRI necessary terseness of epitaphs and reflect on a poetic FRI exponent, William Blake. FRI The concision of telegrams created poetry and humour born of FRI economy. FRI One liner-machine Tim Vine joins Stephen in the studio to FRI discuss his affinity with brevity and 'his passion for small FRI hand grenades of wit' as one reviewer put it. FRI Laura Barton, writer for the Guardian, explores her love of FRI short writing and of neologisms in pop lyrics. If 'la la' FRI means 'I love you' and 'wop-bop-a-loop-a' was an expression FRI which captured the freedom of 50s rock and roll, what short FRI word sums up the world today? FRI Alex Krotoski chooses the word 'Meme' and examines the way FRI technology has given us the means to create ever smaller FRI bespoke packages of information. And more of them.
