SAT A Christmas treat for all Rumpole fans and all Radio 4 SAT listeners who love a good whodunit with a cracking court SAT case thrown in for good measure. Richard Wilson has SAT always said he'd never write one. SAT Based on glimmers of truth, Believe It is the hilarious, SAT bizarre, revealing (and, most importantly, untrue) celebrity SAT radiography of Richard Wilson. SAT He narrates the series, weaving in and out of dramatised SAT scenes from his fictional life-story. He plays a heavily SAT exaggerated version of himself: a Scots actor and national SAT treasure, unmarried, private, passionate about politics, SAT theatre and Manchester United (all true), who's a confidant SAT of the powerful and has survived childhood poverty, a SAT drunken father, years of fruitless grind, too much success, SAT monstrosity, addiction, charity work, secret work for SAT governments and fierce rivalry with Sean Connery (not true). SAT All the melodramatic staples of celebrity-autobiography are SAT wonderfully undercut by Richard's deadpan delivery. SAT (The title - in case you hadn't spotted - is an unashamed SAT reference to his famous catchphrase.) SAT Richard is supported by a small core cast viz SAT David Tennant SAT John Sessions SAT Lewis Macleod SAT Arabella Weir SAT and Jane Slavin SAT who play anyone and everyone! Greg Powrie MON Produced by Patrick Rayner MON The background: MON April 1938 saw the transmission on the BBC's Midland MON Regional Programme of a thriller serial called 'Send for MON Paul Temple', written by Francis Durbridge. For the next MON thirty years, until 1968, the incomparably suave private MON detective and crime novelist Paul, together with his MON glamorous Fleet Street journalist wife Steve, solved case MON after baffling case in one of BBC radio's most enduringly MON popular series. Unfortunately, recordings of many of the MON early series are lost to the archives. MON In 2006 Radio 4 broadcast a brand new production of one of MON the missing Temples - the ninth series, 'Paul Temple and the MON Sullivan Mystery', with Crawford Logan and Gerda Stevenson MON as Paul and Steve. Using vintage microphones and sound MON effects, and much of the original incidental music, the MON production was as far as possible a technical and stylistic MON replica of how the 1947 original might have sounded if its MON recording had survived. It proved enormously popular with MON the audience on Radio 4, and subsequently on Radio 7, with MON hundreds of letters, e-mails and phone calls. A second MON revival in 2008 (this time of 'Paul Temple and the Madison MON Mystery') proved equally popular. So, here we go again, with MON 'Paul Temple and Steve', which was first broadcast on the MON BBC's Light Programme in eight weekly episodes from 30th MON March 1947 to 18th May 1947. MON MON 14:15 Britain on the Bottle: Alcohol and the State MON b00t4qkn (Listen) MON The Doctors Take Over MON A Ministry of Health Report in 1956 referred to heavy MON drinking as something that had been an issue in Britain "at MON times in the 18th and 19th century". In 1961 the Home MON Secretary RA Butler confidently told the Commons that MON "public drunkenness is not a problem". But such denial MON couldn't last long. MON As part of his series on the politics of alcohol in Britain, MON Mark Whitaker focuses on the decision by government in 1962 MON to build specialist alcoholic treatment units around the MON country. It was called "the first official recognition of MON alcoholism as an illness which should be the responsibility MON of doctors", and was an acknowledgement that drinking was on MON the increase. This period saw the first specific warnings MON about teenage drinking. MON But controversies followed. Several Regional Hospital Boards MON were reluctant to invest in the new units; research MON suggested that in-patient treatment was not necessarily the MON most effective; and the strategy was attacked for being of MON limited value to those most in need of help - the unemployed MON meths drinkers of 'Skid Rows' in the major cities. MON This was when the pioneering psychiatrist Griffith Edwards MON first proposed his methods for tackling drunkenness as a MON public health issue, based on its being recognised as a MON community-wide problem. Edwards contributes to the MON programme, while actors read documents from the 1960s. MON Producer: Mark Whitaker MON A Square Dog production for BBC Radio 4. TUE TUE 14:15 Britain on the Bottle: Alcohol and the State TUE b00t3tdc (Listen) TUE The Drink Question, Past and Present TUE In the last decade or so Britain has experienced renewed TUE social and political panic over the consequences of TUE excessive drinking, and the concept of 'alcohol related TUE harms' has entered the language. A coherent policy community TUE has developed, and research has multiplied, around questions TUE of alcohol control. But governments have seemingly been TUE reluctant to listen. TUE Mark Whitaker concludes his look at the politics of alcohol TUE since the 17th century by examining New Labour's Alcohol TUE Harm Reduction Strategy of 2004, and related relaxation of TUE the licensing system. TUE Whitaker interviews the historians whose work has informed TUE his own research, and asks them how they think the past can TUE or should inform present policy. He talks to James Nicholls, TUE Virginia Berridge, John Greenaway and Betsy Thom. They TUE address questions about why the 'Drink Question' has been TUE defined differently at different times; why the liquor TUE industry has been so politically powerful; why the TUE temperance movement lasted so long but seemingly achieved so TUE little; and why alcoholism and drunkenness have posed TUE distinct policy challenges. TUE Above all, they reflect on the complexity of alcohol as a TUE commodity, and on why legislating about it has been, and TUE remains, remarkably difficult. Retired English Master Dr Henry Pickerskill FRI recalls a bullied day boy and his mother. Stars Ian FRI McDiarmid. From July 2011. FRI FRI 07:30 Believe It! b01j5nw6 (Listen) FRI Power FRI Celebrity autobiographies are everywhere. Richard Wilson has FRI always said he'd never write one. FRI Based on glimmers of truth, BELIEVE IT is the hilarious, FRI bizarre, revealing (and, most importantly, untrue) celebrity FRI radiography of Richard Wilson. FRI He narrates the series, weaving in and out of dramatised FRI scenes from his fictional life-story. He plays a heavily FRI exaggerated version of himself: a Scots actor and national FRI treasure, unmarried, private, passionate about politics, FRI theatre and Manchester United (all true), who's a confidant FRI of the powerful and has survived childhood poverty, a FRI drunken father, years of fruitless grind, too much success, FRI monstrosity, addiction, charity work, secret work for FRI governments and fierce rivalry with Sean Connery (not true). FRI All the melodramatic staples of celebrity-autobiography are FRI wonderfully undercut by Richard's deadpan delivery. FRI (The title - in case you hadn't spotted - is an unashamed FRI reference to his famous catchphrase.)
