SAT SAT 01:30 Svelte Sylvia and the Hollywood Trimsters b00tgwlc (Listen) SAT Madame Sylvia was a tiny, opinionated Norwegian who became SAT the toast of 1920s Hollywood. SAT Karen Krizanovich, a film critic and accredited personal SAT trainer, goes to Hollywood in search of Sylvia's story. SAT She goes to Sylvia's house and the studio where she worked, SAT and reads her racy newspaper columns. But she also assesses SAT Sylvia's legacy, questioning the role that fitness and SAT beauty play in modern Hollywood as she talks to a celebrity SAT personal trainer and joins a class of hula-hoopers on Santa SAT Monica beach. SAT Was Sylvia a pioneering trailblazer - or can we blame her SAT for the darker side of today's obsession with the body SAT beautiful? For 500 years pieces always TUE had a clear ending. But in the 20th Century music often TUE ended with a fade out instead. Stuart Maconie looks at how TUE and why this change came about. TUE Pop songs often fade but classical music nearly always has a TUE very clear ending, often a climax with all the performers TUE playing a rousing cadence which almost guaranteed applause. TUE An early exception is Haydn's Farewell Symphony of 1772 TUE which ends with the players leaving the stage one by one, TUE until there are only two players left. Haydn wrote it as a TUE hint that the players needed a break. TUE Holst's Planets Suite (written 1914 -16) ends with a chorus TUE of women's voices sound fading into nothing - perhaps the TUE first true example of a fade in music. TUE At the same time, recording technology was developing and TUE fades could be created by moving away from the recording TUE horn. And record companies began imposing endings for TUE commercial reasons or to fit it onto a side of a 78 record, TUE sometimes with quite brutal results. TUE With the advent of modern recording techniques it became TUE easy to create a fade electrically and from the 1950s TUE onwards this became commonplace. TUE But it was in the 1960s when the fade came into its own, TUE particularly with the iconic 2 minute fade of Hey Jude. TUE So has the fade out simply become a lazy way to end a song? TUE And what happens when that song is played live and a fade TUE isn't possible? TUE Stuart Maconie draws from his own experience as a dj and we TUE also hear from Stephen Johnson presenter of BBC Radio 3's TUE Discovering Music, Jacob Smith Lecturer in Film and TUE Television Studies and remastering engineer Roger Beardsley. WED WED 06:30 Launching the Style Decade b00s7dvt (Listen) WED 30 years after it was launched, Robert Elms investigates the WED origins and influence of The Face, the 'style bible' of the WED 80s. The magazine was at the forefront of a remarkable WED change in the visual landscape of Britain in the 1980s: from WED Sunday newspaper supplements, to television ads, to ordinary WED high street shop fronts. WED Until 1980 music magazines were black and white broadsheet WED papers like the NME and Melody Maker. Then in the summer of WED 1980 The Face changed all that. Started by the former NME WED and Smash Hits editor Nick Logan, it brought a flash of WED colour to the magazine industry, mixing pop, politics, WED photography, fashion and style, all tied together by the WED iconic design of art director Neville Brody. WED The Face advocated that music didn't matter unless everyone WED looked good. WED At its most successful The Face was at the forefront of WED every major youth movement and was pivotal in launching the WED career of models Kate Moss and photgrapher Juergen Teller. THU THU 06:30 Big Game, Little Game b00txjsg (Listen) THU Episode 1 THU Mark Stephen charts a unique swap involving two gamekeepers THU - one from the Kalahari, the other from the Angus Glens. THU Gamekeeper Andy Malcolm is swapping 40,000 acres of heather THU moorland high in the Angus Glens for a reserve on the edge THU of the Kalahari in South Africa. The game warden from there THU will travel to Scotland in a unique swap documented for BBC THU Radio 4. THU The programmes offer the very different perspectives of THU Scottish gamekeeper Andy Malcolm and his South African THU counterpart Dylan Smith. Both men track their experiences in THU the form of audio diaries and in reflections to presenter THU Mark Stephen who is alongside them in this job exchange. How THU they deal with issues ranging from land conservation to THU animal welfare and how far experiences in their own THU landscapes can translate into ideas for their new ones, is THU at the heart of the recordings. THU The Tswalu game reserve in South Africa is currently owned THU by Nicky Oppenheimer's family but was originally the vision THU of the Manchester entrepreneur Stephen Boler. In a four year THU period he established the 100 000 hectare reserve and THU introduced thousands of game animals, including sable and THU roan antelope, Cape buffalo and cheetah. Following his death THU in 1999 the Oppenheimers purchased Tswalu and set about the THU task of restoring the Kalahari to itself: hunting was THU stopped, farm buildings and fences were removed and THU indigenous game like the endangered desert black rhino and THU black-maned Kalahari lions were brought home. The THU Oppenheimer's regularly spent time at Lord Dalhousie's THU Invermark estate in Scotland and although the lands were THU vastly different the realities of overseeing them was not: THU the idea of an exchange arose from a desire to broaden the THU experiences of the two management teams. THU Dylan Smith, Tswalu's Projects Manager, is engaged in a huge THU conservation effort which allows many endangered animals to THU flourish. In some cases, surpluses are used to restock other THU reserves. In Scotland there is a harsher reality; Invermark THU is a traditionally run sporting estate and it's continued THU survival is dependant on producing Red Grouse and Red Deer THU for shooting. Andy Malcolm and the other five gamekeepers THU who work this 55,000 acre highland wilderness take 700 deer THU and up to 1200 brace of grouse annually. However they are THU quick to point out that there are many other beneficiaries. THU "It's a well documented fact that managing moorland for THU grouse improves habitat and increases biodiversity. And at THU peak times the estate employs up to 40 seasonal workers- THU grousebeaters, ghillies, ponymen and the like. That, in THU turn, boosts the local economy. All of this is not always THU appreciated politically. THU Andy Malcolm's life in Kalahari takes some adjusting to: THU from the tortoise ambling across the road, to adrenalin THU filled ventures when he's tracking rhinos and zapping lions: THU "It's the end of a most amazing week...I'm aware of how much THU I haven't told you. I haven't told you just how amazing this THU place really is; how extraordinary it is to be seeing so THU many different animals, birds, insects and plants; and how THU perplexing it is not to know what they are; how strange it THU feels to be in an environment that holds potential dangers. THU It's a place that, if it weren't for the roads, you could THU imagine nobody had ever been here before you. When I get up THU in the morning, the first thing I do is open the doors and THU listen. Back home, you can always hear a river or burn, or THU the wind in the trees, or a dog barking, or a plane flying THU over. Here it's a stillness that's more like total deafness. THU And as I have breakfast, I listen to the world waking up. THU "And I still haven't scratched the surface of Tswalu..It has THU a vast area of plain crossed with dunes, parallel but half a THU mile between them, it has mountains that look higher than THU anything we've got and far more inaccessible due to the THU incredibly broken ground, it has hidden glens and I've even THU seen a pond! THU In this episode, Kim is not happy when a theoretical debate THU about her demise reveals Neil's yearning for an accordion. THU The first and second series of Don't Start met with instant THU critical and audience acclaim: THU "That he can deliver such a heavy premise for a series with THU such a lightness of touch is testament to his skills as a THU writer and, given that the protagonists are both bookworms, THU he's also permitted to use a flourish of fine words that THU would be lost in his stand-up routines." Jane Anderson, THU Radio Times THU "Frank Skinner gives full rein to his sharp but splenetic THU comedy. He and his co-star Katherine Parkinson play a THU bickering couple exchanging acerbic ripostes in a cruelly THU precise dissection of a relationship." Daily Mail THU "...a lesson in relationship ping-pong..." Miranda Sawyer, THU The Observer THU Don't Start is a scripted comedy with a deceptively simple THU premise - an argument. Each week, our couple fall out over THU another apparently trivial flashpoint. Each week, the stakes THU mount as Neil and Kim battle with words. But these are no THU ordinary arguments. The two outdo each other with THU increasingly absurd images, unexpected literary references THU and razor sharp analysis of their beloved's weaknesses. THU Few can forget where they were twenty years ago when they THU first heard "Jeremy Hardy Speaks To The Nation". The show THU was an immediate smash-hit success, causing pubs to empty on THU a Saturday night, which was particularly astonishing since THU the show went out on Thursdays. The Light Entertainment THU department was besieged, questions were asked in the House THU and Jeremy Hardy himself became known as the man responsible THU for the funniest show on radio since Money Box Live with THU Paul Lewis. THU THU 23:45 Knocker b00890vp (Listen) THU Privinvasionacy THU Market researcher Ian Dunn seeks the opinions of a hostile THU public. Stars Neil Edmond and Paula Wilcox. From November THU 2007. THU Everybody hates market researchers. Ian Dunn doesn't know THU that he's doing the worst job in the world. As International THU Query Board UK's only long-serving door-to-door interviewer, THU Ian - armed with a broken clipboard, puny incentives, THU inappropriate footwear and an unflagging commitment to the THU Market Researcher's Code Of Conduct - must persuade a THU hostile public to part with their precious opinions. THU At the ugly end of the business stick - rained on, rejected, THU and ignored - Ian has faith. Faith in the importance of his THU work, faith in a public that are pretending to be out by THU hiding in their bins, faith that - were he to cheat - THU civilisation would crumble within hours. Possibly even THU minutes. For Ian, filling in a survey about flannels is more THU democratic than voting. And he might be right. THU Ian's source for help and guidance is International Query THU Board UK's disinterested Field Manager Mary, who dispenses THU tough love and surveys by phone and post. She burnt her copy THU of the Code Of Conduct back in '76. She can't actually tell THU Ian to cheat - and he's unlikely to take the hint - but, as THU 80% of her interviewers disintegrate within 3 months, she THU can't afford to sack him either. He's never met her, but THU reports in to her at the start of each episode. THU Most important of all are The Respondents. From the sniffy THU suburbs to the stagnant sinkholes he is sent to, Ian blankly THU appeals to the better side of a suspicious populace. After a THU series of daft, brisk rejections, each episode will result THU in a single showcased interviewee - each with their own THU strange reason to cooperate. Every location he's posted to, THU every home he's let into, has a distinct ambience and story THU and each episode its own illogical unwieldy an archaically THU worded survey. THU Knocker is a playful, absurdist trot through the instantly THU recognisable, but nonetheless mysterious labours of a THU hapless, low-waged door-knocker. Spilling from the THU knuckle-bruising rigmarole of cold calling are a wealth of THU ridiculous situations, ensuring a lively, compact 15 minutes THU of intelligent silliness performed by a cast of comedy THU veterans. THU Cast THU Ian Dunn NEIL EDMOND THU Mary PAULA WILCOX THU All other roles in the series are played by JULIA DEAKIN, THU TINA GRAY, SIMON GREENALL, BEN ONWUKWE, SIMON TREVES, PAUL THU WILCOX and ROSIE WILKINSON. THU Writer THU Neil Edmond is co-founder and member of the comedy sketch THU group The Consultants, who have a Perrier Award and four BBC THU Radio 4 series to their name. He's performed in Green Wing, THU Peep Show, Man Stroke Woman, Hyperdrive, Modern Men and Lead THU Balloon. He's recently completed filming the semi-improvised THU 'Where are the Joneses?', a daily online sitcom made by Baby THU cow. Neil trudged through three years of door-to-door Market THU Research interviewing more than 3000 people. He still gets THU Christmas cards from two of them. THU Episode 1 - Privinvasionacy THU Shivering in a leafy, unadopted road of long gravel THU driveways and mini-mansions, Ian politely asks Mary if he THU can go home - his clipboard's gone wonky in the wet and THU today's survey is the embarrassingly invasive 'Lower Body THU Hygiene Study Phase 1'. Mary says no. As Ian discovers what THU every door-knocker knows - that the chance of an interview THU is inversely proportional to length of the drive - he THU embarks on an unwinnable debate as to why he's not covered THU by a 'No canvassers, no hawkers, no circulars' sign, before THU finally discovering a woman who's all too willing to talk - THU about anything but the survey...
