SAT SAT 04:00 The 3rd Degree b01dhn6p (Listen) SAT Series 2, Swansea University SAT Coming this week from Swansea University, "The 3rd Degree" SAT is a funny, lively and dynamic quiz show aimed at SAT cultivating the next generation of Radio 4 listeners whilst SAT delighting the current ones. It's recorded on location at a SAT different University each week, and it pits three SAT Undergraduates against three of their Professors in a SAT genuinely original and fresh take on an academic quiz. Being SAT a Radio 4 programme, it of course meets the most stringent SAT standards of academic rigour - but with lots of facts and SAT jokes thrown in for good measure. SAT Together with host Steve Punt, the show tours the (sometimes SAT posh, sometimes murky, but always welcoming!) Union SAT buildings, cafés and lecture halls of six universities SAT across the UK. SAT The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General SAT Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the SAT 'Highbrow & Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not SAT only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, SAT languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness SAT of television, film, and Lady Gaga... In addition, the SAT Head-to-Head rounds, in which students take on their SAT Professors in their own subjects, were particularly lively, SAT and offered plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both SAT sides... SAT The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit SAT surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly SAT rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more SAT than just glanced at that reading list... SAT SAT 05:30 Pauline Pepys Dowry b00tbkfx (Listen) SAT Samuel Pepys' diaries make occasional mention of his sister SAT Pauline who has come to visit. SAT Meet Pauline Pepys. Her love life is in tatters, her SAT sister-in-law wants her to move out of the spare room, and SAT her best friend is her worst enemy. Oh, and this being SAT London in the 1660s there's a nasty spot of plague about. SAT This episode sees Pauline fall for a handsome executioner, SAT but when he seems to prefer Charlotte she offers to fix SAT Pauline up with a very romantic poet. Meanwhile Elizabeth SAT has arranged for a lavish portrait of herself and Samuel SAT that is not altogether going to plan. And the maid is doing SAT something awful with a dead fish and a goat. SAT A new historical comedy starring Olivia Colman as hopeless SAT romantic Pauline, Sharon Horgan as her best friend Charlotte SAT the vainest woman in Britain, David Mitchell as a distinctly SAT itchy Samuel Pepys, Katherine Parkinson as Elizabeth his SAT wife, who is very stressed about making the right impression SAT on society; and Tom Hollander as Russell de Bret, a man who SAT in the twenty first century would be a rock star, but has SAT chosen instead the career of public executioner; with SAT Rebekah Staton as the peculiarly fish-obsessed house maid SAT Jane and Dave Lamb as Joth a very angry painter and Wilston, SAT a very sad poet... SAT SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 b01c6kr7 (Listen) SAT Attention All Shipping SAT "I love it. It's the nearest thing to poetry that I ever got SAT to read on the radio - wonderful cadences" - Charlotte SAT Green, Radio 4 announcer and newsreader is just one of SAT dozens of professional broadcasters who've been transfixed SAT by the strangely elegiac nature of the curt and abbreviated SAT language of the formal statement of weather conditions SAT around our island. For Archive on 4, Charlotte's former SAT colleague, Peter Jefferson presents an elegy to the Shipping SAT Forecast, travelling via the archive through the history and SAT romance of the sea areas that daily make their weather known SAT to seafarers. SAT The sea is calm tonight. SAT The tide is full, the moon lies fair SAT Upon the Straits; - on the French coast the light SAT Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand, SAT Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay. SAT But Matthew Arnold's poem 'Dover Beach' also perfectly SAT encapsulates the spirit in which many Radio 4 listeners SAT embrace the Forecast; gazing into the depths of the night, a SAT seascape of indigo swept by a distant lighthouse beam. So is SAT the Shipping Forecast as much a hymn to our former seafaring SAT island as formal meteorological bulletin, to be shared and SAT enjoyed by landlubbers who've long escaped all contact with SAT the sea and ships....? SAT Peter travels to Exeter where the Forecast is compiled from SAT the Met Office's supercomputer's myriad pieces of data... SAT and talks to sailor and radio-lover Libby Purves, national SAT poet of Wales and composer of an ode to the Forecast, SAT Gillian Clarke and to photographer Mark Power, who shot a SAT stunning sequence of black-and-white images of the sea SAT areas. FRI FRI 06:30 Fort Dunlop b00qpmgh (Listen) FRI Giles Poyner, a creative director at the iconic Fort Dunlop FRI building, pays tribute to the Birmingham landmark. He, his FRI mother and grandfather talk about their working life there. FRI Drive through Birmingham on the M6 and you can't fail to FRI notice an imposing fort-like building, standing proud FRI against the city's industrial skyline. The Fort Dunlop FRI building was built for the tyre company in the early 20th FRI century to accommodate the thousands of workers needed to FRI supply the growing motoring and aviation industries. The FRI Dunlop Tyre Company, along with the Austin Motor Company and FRI Cadbury's, was Birmingham's biggest employer, and those who FRI worked there had a job for life. But by the end of the FRI century, competition from overseas led to the closure of the FRI site, as Dunlop transferred much of its operation overseas. FRI The Fort was abandoned and stood empty for 20 years, until FRI it was taken over by an innovative urban design company who FRI transformed the vast empty warehouse space into state of the FRI art offices, cafes and shops. FRI This is where Giles Poyner works as design manager. The FRI achingly hip surroundings of his office are a far cry from FRI his 92-year-old grandfather's experience of working at the FRI Fort. He recalls the stench of rubber in the air, the FRI workers arriving by canal boat before the road was built FRI and, above all, the sense of being part of a family, cared FRI for by a benevolent employer. FRI Giles's mother Susan also worked at Fort Dunlop as a typist FRI during the 1960s. She remembers the generous facilities FRI provided for the workers, including a pub, theatre and FRI playing fields. FRI Giles Poyner pays tribute to this iconic Birmingham landmark FRI and discovers how his workplace has changed both physically FRI and culturally over the decades. FRI He plunders his guests' pasts and creativity over a series FRI of rounds in which panellists have to be wrong to be right. FRI In this episode, the guests joining him to try and out-wrong FRI each other with their ideas and stories are comedians Lee FRI Mack, Susan Calman and "Harry Hill's TV Burp" writer Daniel FRI Maier. FRI In this edition the phrase 'keep calm and carry on' and FRI ridiculous things to get angry about both come under the FRI 'wrong' spotlight - as well as the best ideas for the worst FRI new concept albums. Will anyone beat Susan Calman's pitch FRI for an album based on her cat's bid to take part in the 2012 FRI Olympics? FRI The host of So Wrong It's Right, Charlie Brooker, also FRI presents BBC2's How TV Ruined Your Life, Channel 4's You FRI Have Been Watching and 10 O'Clock Live, and writes for The FRI Guardian. FRI FRI 09:00 The 3rd Degree b01dtkjn (Listen) FRI Series 2, Warwick FRI Coming this week from the University of Warwick, "The 3rd FRI Degree" is a funny, lively and dynamic quiz show aimed at FRI cultivating the next generation of Radio 4 listeners whilst FRI delighting the current ones. It's recorded on location at a FRI different University each week, and it pits three FRI Undergraduates against three of their Professors in a FRI genuinely original and fresh take on an academic quiz. Being FRI a Radio 4 programme, it of course meets the most stringent FRI standards of academic rigour - but with lots of facts and FRI jokes thrown in for good measure. FRI Together with host Steve Punt, the show tours the (sometimes FRI posh, sometimes murky, but always welcoming!) Union FRI buildings, cafés and lecture halls of six universities FRI across the UK. FRI The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General FRI Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the FRI 'Highbrow & Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not FRI only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, FRI languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness FRI of television, film, and Lady Gaga... In addition, the FRI Head-to-Head rounds, in which students take on their FRI Professors in their own subjects, were particularly lively, FRI and offered plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both FRI sides... FRI The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit FRI surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly FRI rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more FRI than just glanced at that reading list... FRI Produced by Eilidh McCreadie. FRI FRI 11:15 Afternoon Drama b01061ht (Listen) FRI Anita Sullivan - Titanium FRI History rarely remembers who came second. If Yuri Gagarin FRI had so much as sneezed on the 12th of April 1961 the honour FRI of being the first man in orbit would have gone to his FRI training partner, Gherman Titov. But Gagarin didn't sneeze FRI and a disappointed Titov had to climb back down the launch FRI tower. A few months later Titov did launch successfully in FRI Vostock II. He completed 17 earth orbits (got space-sick, FRI ate and slept) and is still the youngest person ever to have FRI gone into space. But he's largely unheard of because he FRI wasn't 'first'. In Anita Sullivan's play, which marks the FRI 50th anniversary of Gagarin's flight, the story of the two FRI cosmonauts - their training, their selection, the flight and FRI its aftermath, is told through Titov's eyes as he waits at FRI Chkalovsky Airbase for Yuri to return from what should have FRI been a routine training flight on the 27th March 1968.
