With Douglas Blackwell and SAT Alexander John. SAT SAT 00:30 Fry's English Delight b00t9t6r (Listen) SAT Series 3, The Trial of Qwerty SAT All rise for Judge Stephen Fry, in whose court the Qwerty SAT keyboard stands trial. SAT The gravest charge against the still ubiquitous Qwerty is SAT that the layout was designed deliberately to slow typing SAT down. SAT Typists in the 1870's got too fast for their machines. The SAT keys would easily stick. Typists would have to delve under SAT the bonnet to untangle them. SAT Messy business. Dirty Mr Qwerty. SAT But will the charge against Qwerty stick? Invented in the SAT 1870's before the age of ergonomics and future proofing, it SAT was a result of a commercial race to dominate the new SAT typewriting industry with a universal system. The father of SAT formats. There were typewriting races too, which resembled SAT today's motor racing. Hyped up typists, competing systems SAT and publicity hungry manufacturers proved only one thing: SAT the new fangled typewriting machines could be very noisy. SAT Alongside contributions from historians and qwerty experts, SAT Stephen meets a man who has deqwertified himself and adopted SAT Dvorak, a system claimed to be quicker and cleaner than SAT Qwerty. There's also an examination of newer, more modern SAT formats, which may be more efficient but are no match for SAT qwerty. SAT We also meet some speedy junior qwertists' primary school SAT pupils who learn to touch type as part of their curriculum. SAT They come up an idea for the ultimate system for inputting SAT text and in so doing demonstrate an important point about SAT how thought relates to language, and how any system, using SAT keyboard, pen or even speech is a compromise. SAT But will Qwerty be acquitted? SAT Producer: Nick Baker SAT A Testbed production for BBC Radio 4. SAT This week, Kate looks at the subject of "A Big White SAT Wedding". Is it every little girl's dream to be walked down SAT the aisle feeling like a Disney Princess, looking like she's SAT been swallowed by taffeta? What if you're more Lightwater SAT Valley Lass than Disney Princess? SAT Kate got married in a lighthouse, with guests waiting to SAT cross the causeway because the lighthouse keeper drew up the SAT wrong tide times. The wedding cost under a thousand pounds SAT and guests brought their own food. To Kate, it was perfect. SAT But would this somewhat unconventional day cost other brides SAT their wedding smiles? SAT Statistics show that males and females still divide domestic SAT duties up in traditional ways, although in Kate's household SAT these roles are almost completely reversed. Is there such a SAT thing as the perfect formula for marriage or is it a SAT tradition as outdated as Morris Dancing with only slightly SAT fewer hankies and bells? SAT Kate Fox is a comedian and poet from the North East of SAT England. She has contributed poems and comic pieces to many SAT Radio 4 shows including Saturday Live, Wondermentalist SAT Cabaret, From Fact to Fiction, Woman's Hour and Arthur SAT Smith's Balham Bash. With Elaine Stritch and Sandi SAT Toksvig. SAT SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 b01qsqfp (Listen) SAT The Devil's Horn SAT The saxophone is the most important musical invention of the SAT last 170 years. Lauded for its adventurous sound, its SAT sensuality and seemingly never-ending versatility, the brass SAT woodwind horn has become one of the most popular instruments SAT in the world. Today, it's at home in classical music as it SAT is in pop with hundreds of famous composers writing SAT significant pieces for its shapely curves. Neither of these SAT musical homes compare to its place in jazz, where its SAT presence is so influential it's hard to think of another SAT instrument more associated with the genre. SAT But for some the sax produces a devilish sound, whether SAT that's down to taste or decency. It's been shunned by polite SAT society, banished from orchestras and even denounced by SAT governments. Much worse, in recent times it has been accused SAT of blandness and crowned the king of elevator music. SAT British jazz musician Soweto Kinch examines the saxophone's SAT place in history in Radio 4's Archive on 4. An alto player SAT himself, Kinch investigates the instrument's captivating and SAT somewhat turbulent journey through musical and spoken SAT archive. Aiding Soweto with expert analysis are his friend SAT and fellow sax player Courtney Pine, leading classical SAT saxophonist Amy Dickson, historian Dr Paul Cohen, director SAT of the 2012 World Saxophone Congress Richard Ingham and SAT comedian David Quantick. SAT SAT 09:00 Jay Rayner Gets Stuffed b03tr1fv (Listen) SAT Food writer and restaurant critic Jay Rayner is known for SAT banging on about the awful - and sometimes lovely - things SAT that cooks do to blameless ingredients. Here, he offers up a SAT few of his own. In a personal selection of deliciously SAT fat-drenched, gut-busting grub-related radio, he looks back SAT and celebrates decades of us mucking around with our food. SAT Jay's choices include: a generous helping of loudmouth chef SAT Anthony Bourdain; a rare appearance from Elizabeth David on SAT The Food Programme; Keith Floyd starring as a Roman chef in SAT a late-night R4 comedy; and Nina Myskow talking to essayist SAT David Sedaris, children's author Judith Kerr and dancer SAT Carlos Acosta about what they really eat. There's a dash of SAT Miles Jupp as Damien Trench, In and Out of the Kitchen; a SAT pinch of sarcasm with The Sunday Format on Gastronimity. We SAT hear from a Philadelphia deli in award-winning documentary SAT One Big Kitchen Table, from a Radio 2 phone-in about the SAT chicken shop with Vanessa Feltz, and from the world of SAT competitive American barbecuing with Russell Davies in You SAT Is What You Eat. MON Exupery ..... Paul Rhys MON Prevot ..... Adeel Akhtar MON Bedouin ..... Sean Baker MON Director: David Hunter MON When Antoine de Saint-Exupery and his co-pilot Prevot crash MON in the Libyan Desert while attempting to break the record MON for the Paris-Saigon flight in 1935 the odds are stacked MON against them. Miraculously they survive the impact - and MON while the plane doesn't catch fire or explode the fuel and MON water tanks are ruptured and supplies are only minimal. With MON only half a litre of coffee, a little white wine, a few MON grapes and an orange they only know they are stranded MON somewhere in a square of inhospitable desert whose sides MON measure 400km. MON The days are scorching and the nights freezing. Their signal MON fires go unnoticed. Their forays to find help are fruitless MON and increasingly desperate. Physically weak, they become MON prone to hallucinations. Mirages appear on their horizons. MON Life is tested to its limits and the increasingly MON debilitated dialogue between Exupery and Prevot is MON accompanied by Exupery's inner thoughts and meditations on MON their situation. This not only describes their physical MON journey but, in Exupery's characteristic fashion, takes us MON on a journey that deals with previous flying expeditions and MON his very detailed view of the insights flying, particularly MON in the very basic sort of aircraft he flew, gives to our MON perception of our relationship with the planet. Although MON written 70 years ago the story still has relevant messages MON for us today in the context of our increased awareness of MON globalisation and climate change. MON Antoine de Saint-Exupery was a larger-than-life character. MON Born into an aristocratic French family in 1900, flying and MON writing were his two passions. In 1926 he joined the airline MON Latecoere, later to become Aeropostale, as one of its MON pioneering aviators, charged with opening mail routes to MON remote African colonies and to South America with primitive MON planes and in dangerous conditions. His career was MON punctuated by scrapes and near-fatal crashes - WIND, SAND MON AND STARS charting one of these. MON Exiled to America after the French surrender in 1940 he MON wrote the classic children's tale THE LITTLE PRINCE and the MON novel FLIGHT TO ARRAS, the latter charting his war MON experiences as a reconnaissance pilot and which headed the MON US best seller list for 6 months in 1942. Having persuaded MON Allied Commanders to let him fly again he disappeared over MON the Mediterranean in July 1944 presumed shot down by a MON German fighter. TUE Between 1969 and 1972, the clinical psychologist David TUE Rosenhan and seven other people - none of whom had a TUE psychiatric diagnosis - got themselves admitted to 12 TUE different psychiatric hospitals around the United States. TUE They did this by presenting with a single symptom, saying TUE that they heard a voice which said words such as 'empty', TUE 'dull' and 'thud.' Once admitted, they acted completely TUE normally. Nevertheless, they were kept in for periods of TUE between 8 and 52 days. Seven of them were diagnosed with TUE schizophrenia and were released as being 'in remission'; not TUE one of them was judged to be sane. TUE After Rosenhan published On Being Sane in Insane Places in TUE the journal Science in 1973, the psychiatric profession went TUE on the defensive to protest its diagnostic competence. The TUE study struck at the heart of their attempts to medicalise TUE psychiatry and be accepted as proper doctors. Its impact was TUE felt when the third edition of the profession's bible, the TUE Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, came out in 1980: changes TUE had been made which brought more rigour to the diagnostic TUE process. TUE However, as Claudia discovers from Rosenhan's unpublished TUE papers, for him the study was less an experiment of TUE diagnostic efficacy than an anthropological survey of TUE psychiatric wards. In a chapter of the book he never TUE finished, she reads his poignant account of his own first TUE admission, and his sense that 'minimal attention was paid to TUE my presence, as if I hardly existed'. TUE Now suffering ill health and unable to speak, Rosenhan TUE delegates his friends and colleagues professor of social TUE psychology at Stanford University Lee Ross and clinical TUE psychologist Florence Keller to speak to Claudia and show TUE her the box containing previously unpublished material which TUE throws new light on one of the most controversial and famous TUE psychology experiments. WED In the 1920s, at the enormous Western Electric Hawthorne WED Factory in Cicero outside Chicago, management began an WED experiment which was to improve the working life of millions WED and give rise to a phenomenon that anyone planning a WED psychology experiment would have to take into account in WED their design. WED Keen to improve productivity at a time when the telephone WED industry was growing and Western Electric was building the WED components for all the telephone exchanges in the United WED States, management decided to see whether working conditions WED affected production. But the initial 'illumination studies' WED were inconclusive; whether lighting was increased or WED decreased to no better than moonlight, productivity WED increased. Whatever the intervention, it seemed to promote WED faster work. WED Confused, management turned to economists from Harvard WED Business School to design a more complex study. So, in April WED 1927 five women were removed from the factory floor and put WED in a separate room - the relay assembly test room. For the WED next five years, as they assembled the complex relays they WED were minutely monitored. Their working conditions were WED regularly altered, but whether breaks were included or WED removed, their working day lengthened or shortened, their WED productivity continued to rise. WED The study improved working conditions throughout the WED factory, as breaks were introduced for all, but it also gave WED rise to a phenomenon known as The Hawthorne Effect, which WED has to be taken into account in the design of any experiment WED - the mere fact that subjects know that they are being WED studied may alter their behaviour. WED Yet The Hawthorne Effect is widely questioned. How can an WED experiment using such a small sample - five women, two of WED whom were changed during the study - have given rise to such WED a ubiquitous theory? WED With the help of the Hawthorne Museum in Cicero, the Baker WED Library archive and Professor Michel Anteby at Harvard WED Business School, Professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld of Yale WED Business School who met the original participants in the WED study back in the 1970s, and Mecca Chiesa of the University WED of Kent, Claudia Hammond re-examines the classic Hawthorne WED Studies. FRI She re-visits Ellen Langer and Judith Rodin's 1976 study, FRI conducted in a New England nursing home, Arden House. FRI When the two psychologists set up the experiment so that FRI residents on two floors of the 360-bed home for the elderly FRI would experience some changes in their everyday life, they FRI had no idea that they were introducing factors which could FRI prolong life. FRI While residents on both floors were given plants and film FRI shows, only those on the fourth floor had the opportunity to FRI control these events: choosing the plant and looking after FRI it themselves, and choosing which night of the week to view FRI the film. FRI Eighteen months later, when Langer and Rodin returned to the FRI home, they were astonished to discover that twice as many of FRI the elderly residents in this 'choices' group were alive, FRI compared with the control group on the second floor, who had FRI been given plants that the staff tended, and were told which FRI was their film night.
