TUE TUE 06:30 Really Happening! b00vcqjf (Listen) TUE Fifty years ago the Happening was what was really happening, TUE on the international visual art scene. Instead of people TUE visiting galleries to look at art objects, audiences became TUE involved in a series of events that made no distinction TUE between observer and observed, and sometimes didn't seem to TUE have a beginning, middle or end. Happenings paved the way TUE for performance art and live art. And the 60s wouldn't have TUE been half as groovy without them. Early Happenings, like TUE Allan Kaprow's 18 Happenings in 6 Parts, Claes Oldenburg's TUE Snapshots From A City and Al Hansens' Requiem For W.C. TUE Fields, inspired a generation of young artists, and grabbed TUE the attention of the public. In this programme, Bob TUE Dickinson re-imagines the Happening with contemporary TUE artists and writers including RoseLee Goldberg, Ilana TUE Mitchell, Andrea Cusmano, and Lorenzo Fusi. Dickinson also TUE investigates the way Happenings travelled around the world, TUE to Asia and Europe, thanks to Nam June Paik in Korea and TUE Japan, Adrian Henri in Liverpool, the Viennese Aktionists, TUE Joseph Beuys in Germany, and Yves Klein in France. TUE As Happenings became part of popular culture, they became TUE increasingly spectacular, and in 1967 Britain's biggest ever TUE example of the activity was staged at Alexandra Palace in TUE London - the 24 Hour Technicolour Dream. It was a TUE high-point, in more ways than one, for the hippie TUE counterculture, but it also marked the point when Happenings TUE stopped being art. We meet an eye-witness. Now, half a TUE century after Happenings transformed the art scene, some TUE contemporary artists, such as Tanya Bruguera, from Cuba, are TUE revisiting and reviving several of Allan Kaprow's classic TUE Happenings for a new audience - and we find out what happens TUE when she tries them out on the streets and shops of TUE Liverpool. TUE In the penultimate episode Mark Steel visits the TUE Renfrewshire town of Paisley, in Scotland, but definitely TUE not in Glasgow. The largest town in Scotland, Paisley has a TUE rich history; being at the centre of the weaving industry it TUE gave its name to the famous Paisley pattern, as well as TUE being the site of a landmark legal battle involving a snail TUE in a bottle of ginger beer which led to a change in consumer TUE law. More recently, Paisley elected Mhairi Black, the TUE youngest MP since 1832. TUE Whilst in town Mark visits a 'Car Park In The Sky', has a TUE wander round a 12th century Abbey with alien gargoyles and TUE ends up having a game of pool with a dog called Murphy. FRI Starring Penelope Keith as Agatha Raisin, Malcolm Sinclair FRI as James Lacey, Liza Sadovy as Mrs Bloxby and Rebecca Saire FRI as Lucy Danvers. FRI Dramatised by David Semple from the novel by MC Beaton FRI Producer Carol Smith FRI First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2006. FRI FRI 06:30 In Search of the Singing Postman b00tmlh2 (Listen) FRI The writer DJ Taylor grew up in Norfolk. When he was missing FRI his roots, he'd put on a record by Allan Smethurst, The FRI Singing Postman, to remind him of home. FRI Smethurst is best known for one song - Have You Got A Loight FRI Boy. By the mid 1960's he featured on the pop chart, just FRI behind The Moody Blues. With his goofy smile and postman's FRI uniform, he was the one hit wonder to end all one hit FRI wonders. But DJ Taylor believes he was something far more FRI than that. FRI Taylor argues that the songs turn out, not to be novelty FRI numbers, but plaintive celebrations of a kind of lost, rural FRI life that had begun to disappear, even as it was committed FRI to vinyl. His songs are firmly rooted in the traditional FRI ballads of Norfolk. His work is the last gasp of a genuinely FRI popular art form, before it went down amid the onslaught of FRI post-war mass culture. FRI There were even plans to send Smethurst to Nashville, the FRI idea being that 'Country and Eastern' would appeal to the US FRI audience. Smethurst admired the early American greats like FRI Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter Family - their playing FRI influenced his own lilting guitar style. FRI This programme tells the story of Smethurst's brief FRI dalliance with fame and his steady fall into obscurity as he FRI struggled with alcohol addiction. DJ Taylor pays tribute to FRI the man who loved Norfolk, and through his songs preserved FRI the memories and language of an entire way of life. FRI The programme is produced in Manchester by Nicola Swords. FRI This week, Kate looks at the subject of children. Are we all FRI wired to be baby-making machines? Not always, no. Some of us FRI would rather spend our hard earned cash in Mango than FRI Mothercare. Prospective parents are plagued by questions - FRI Would I be a good parent? Would a child change my life FRI beyond all recognition? Would having a child mean I could FRI legitimately buy myself Lego and eat jelly? FRI Can legislation across the world be used to either encourage FRI or discourage parenthood? And what's the cost of feeling you FRI have to want the same things as everybody else? Kate and the FRI audience draw up a list of pros and cons of having children, FRI and work out whether the average cost of raising a child FRI could be better spent making our lives more fun and FRI meaningful in other ways. FRI Next week Kate looks at "The Big White Wedding" - is it FRI every little girl's dream to be walked down the aisle FRI feeling like a Disney princess, looking like she's been FRI swallowed by taffeta? What if you're more Light Water Valley FRI lass than Disney Princess? FRI Kate Fox is a comedian and poet from the North East of FRI England.
