SAT SAT 01:30 The Wonderful Weightless World of the Flexidisc SAT b00sgbcr (Listen) SAT Long before the invention of the MP3, there was a way of SAT getting hold of music, speech, and other audio sensations, SAT free of charge, in the form of flexidiscs. Originally SAT developed in the 1930s to play at 78rpm, by the 1960s, SAT seven-inch, 45rpm flexidiscs were so cheap to produce, and SAT so light and bendy, that they were often given away free SAT with a magazine. In the Soviet Union, though, where SAT flexidiscs were called roentgenizdat, and were recorded on SAT disused medical x-ray sheets, the audio was usually of an SAT illegal nature, such as jazz music, or, later, punk rock. In SAT telling the story of the flexidisc, we'll hear plenty of SAT music, some of which is now valuable (such as the Rolling SAT Stones Exit on Mainstreet Blues, given away with New Musical SAT Express in 1972). SAT In tracking down the story of flexidiscs, presenter Paul SAT Bayley meets collector Jez Randell, journalist Ian Shirley, SAT and the novelist Tim Lott, who co-founded Flexipop magazine SAT in the early 1980s (which gave away a free flexi with every SAT issue). The programme includes extracts from flexidiscs SAT galore, including several advertisements for products as SAT diverse as crisps, hair pieces and rat poison, music from SAT big band jazz to beat groups to punk rock, and some of the SAT most famous recordings made on flexidisc including Beatles SAT fanclub records, Private Eye's satirical flexidiscs and the SAT sound of humpback whales, from the world's biggest SAT circulation flexidisc ever. TUE This deeply personal programme follows him as he TUE investigates for the first time the story behind this iconic TUE cover. TUE It is a famously unsettling image. Taken at the Giants TUE Causeway in Northern Ireland, Stefan and his sister Samantha TUE appear naked climbing up the eerie landscape against a TUE bright orange apocalyptic sky. TUE It's a photo that's dogged Stefan all his life. Ever since TUE he was a child, the picture has disturbed him, even scared TUE him. He's ambivalent about it; should he be proud of it or TUE is there something to be ashamed of? He's purposely never TUE found out the story behind it. He has never even listened to TUE the record. TUE Now he sets out to revisit that chapter in his life and to TUE confront his own mixed emotions about it, discovering the TUE story behind the image, and its ideas and ethics. He TUE discovers his sister's memories of the difficulties in TUE getting it made, confronts his mother about why she let him TUE pose naked as a child and meets Aubrey Powell, the cover TUE art's photographer, from the famous graphic design team TUE Hipgnosis. TUE Andria fell hook, line and sinker for the enigmatic and TUE brooding Russian pianist, Boris. They met at a street market TUE and the attraction was instant. He posted a little Russian TUE doll through her letterbox with his phone number attached. TUE How could she resist? TUE She decides to buy a bed. A 'lit bateau'; a boat bed, which TUE she hoped was going to be a metaphor for the fantastic TUE voyage the two of them were about to embark on together. TUE Sure enough, nine months later, the sound of Boris's piano TUE playing is punctuated by the patter of feet across the TUE parquet floor. Well, they are paws to be precise, belonging TUE to an Italian greyhound that Andria found on the street. TUE They name her Mimi. TUE Boris's passion for his art, once the very thing that TUE attracted Andria, is becoming a source of friction. That TUE intensity that was once directed to her is now being poured TUE into his music. He's playing piano at 4am in the morning, TUE Andria is angry and Mimi is confused. THU Well observed, clever and funny, Don't Start is a scripted THU comedy with a deceptively simple premise - an argument. Each THU week, our couple fall out over another apparently trivial THU flashpoint - a text from a friend, a trilby and a bad THU night's sleep. Each week, the stakes mount as Neil and Kim THU battle with words. But these are no ordinary arguments. THU Warhorses of Letters stars Stephen Fry as Marengo, the THU seasoned, famous and just-a-little-bit-short mount of THU Emperor Napoleon.
