Weaving together personal stories and SAT historical anecdote, he traces his relationship with cars SAT through a lifetime of biography. SAT Learning to drive was no easy matter for Michael. The SAT lessons required military precision when practising how to SAT get in and out of his car correctly. His biographical SAT subjects also had their difficulties: Bernard Shaw drove SAT with reckless gusto when overtaking his eightieth year; Vita SAT Sackville-West's car became a chamber for sudden romantic SAT assignations and getaways; Augustus John and his family SAT careered through vulnerable villages as the poor vehicle, SAT piled high with bohemian friends, stuttered and jerked along SAT in first gear. SAT Wry, thoughtful and very funny, On Wheels is an elegy to the SAT glamour of the car. Subtle and perceptive, Michael Holroyd SAT finds surprising ways to understand the past and challenge SAT our view of the future. SAT Episode 5 of 5 SAT In the final episode, Michael Holroyd describes playwright SAT Bernard Shaw's enthusiastic, if cavalier, approach to SAT driving - only thwarted by the outbreak of world war. SAT Burgess was born in 1917 in one of the poorest areas of SAT North Manchester. It was entirely unpredictable that such a SAT major literary figure and polymath would spring from such a SAT humble background. He remained in Manchester until he SAT graduated from the University, but never went back to live SAT there and was careful to disguise his Northern accent. SAT Paul Morley - a fellow Northern exile - visits some of the SAT key landmarks of Burgess's early life - Xaverian College SAT where he was taught by strict Catholics from the Xaverian SAT Brothers; the Free Trade Hall where he heard the Hallé SAT Orchestra; Central Library where he began a lifelong process SAT of self-education. SAT Paul also considers Burgess's continuing passion for writing SAT classical music; his first creative ambition was to be a SAT composer. He wrote over 200 pieces of pieces of classical SAT music, including full-length symphonies and a ballet. Very SAT little of his music was performed during his lifetime, but SAT it is now attracting interest from musicians and academics. SAT Burgess's legacy includes not only 33 published novels, two SAT autobiographies and a large amount of journalism but a SAT previously unheard archive of about 800 audio cassettes and SAT home movies. Paul Morley visits The International Anthony SAT Burgess Foundation in Manchester, which is cataloguing this SAT rich, diverse and remarkable archive. SAT Contributors include Dr Andrew Biswell, biographer of SAT Anthony Burgess and Director of The International Anthony SAT Burgess Foundation; Paul Philips, author of a book about SAT Burgess's music; and Dr Kevin Malone an expert on the music SAT Burgess himself wrote for his own dramatized version of A SAT Clockwork Orange. SAT SAT 09:00 Double or Nothing: Partnerships in Radio Comedy SAT b007wdvv (Listen) SAT Hugh Dennis sets out to prove that two of anything is fun - SAT and that radio comedy is especially good served in pairs. He SAT presents a selection of six comic duos: Little Britain SAT (March 2002), Much Binding in the Marsh (Feb 1949), In All SAT Directions (Oct 1952), Absolute Power (Jan 2002), Armstrong SAT and Miller (March 1998), and Laurel and Hardy On Tour SAT (2006). SAT Over three hours, you'll get a firm flavour of the dynamics SAT of double acts in action. Double acts aren't always SAT performers - writing partnerships are just as important, and SAT sometimes it's a couple of characters which make great SAT comedic chemistry. SAT An alumni of Cambridge footlights, Hugh Dennis is perhaps SAT best known for his own association with Steve Punt - both SAT hosts of BBC Radio 4's long-running comedy hit The Now Show, SAT as well as part of the legendary line-up in 4 Extra's SAT archive stable-mate The Mary Whitehouse Experience. Simon Evans has the answer in this new series THU which asks us to get involved in investment. THU Rather than being cowed by an apparently complicated and THU overwhelming system, Simon jumps right in. He takes as his THU focus four commodities which are so intrinsic to our lives THU they have an almost elemental significance - land, gold, oil THU and grain. Yet, despite the fact we encounter them THU everywhere we look, very few people have been able to build THU a fortune on them. THU All that's about to change as, Simon enlists help from the THU experts. Each week he will be joined by Tim Harford, Merryn THU Somerset Webb and a guest specialist as they examine the THU chequered social and economic histories of these THU commodities. By looking at four such fundamental products, THU Simon brings us to a closer understanding of how global THU economic forces have a far-reaching and often surprising THU impact on our lives. THU In this episode, Simon looks at commodities markets in oil THU or petrolium. How is it produced? Why is this trade THU different to others? Is our over-reliance on it dangerous?
