SAT SAT 07:30 The Six Faces of Henry VIII b00kj2dy (Listen) SAT With the help of writers, historians, musicologists, film SAT buffs and Alan Bennett, Ian Hislop sets out to analyse six SAT images of Henry VIII which turn out to be rather better SAT portraits of the periods in which they were created than SAT they are historical insights into the King himself. However, SAT given that his most famous portrait, by Hans Holbein, is SAT itself an artfully drawn propaganda tool we shouldn't be all SAT that surprised. SAT Henry has always been associated with numeric scale. The SAT eighth Henry with six wives; nothing associated with him SAT comes in ones and twos. And so it is with the images of our SAT glowering, beefy, puffy-cheeked monarch. The range is SAT enormous, from Hans Holbein's splay-footed heavyweight to SAT the surly athleticism of Jonathan Rhys Meyers in BBC One's SAT The Tudors. SAT Shakespeare produced an understandably careful dramatic SAT portrait, but the Director Alexander Korda used his 1930's SAT film The Private Life of Henry VIII to show us Charles SAT Laughton as the consummate spoilt brat, a glutton with the SAT heart of a valiant schoolboy and the stomach of several SAT kings. This was the first time we saw a Henry who chucked SAT chicken bones over his shoulder, slapped his thigh and SAT laughed loudly, sure in the knowledge that the world would SAT laugh with him. SAT And then there are the Operatic versions supplied in the SAT 19th century by Saint Saens and Donnizetti respectively. SAT Here Henry is more monster than man alongside the sad SAT heroines Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. They were, of SAT course, coming from a rather more Catholic perspective. SAT Meanwhile in Restoration History books he's a seventeenth SAT century Hercules. SAT So who gets closest to the real King? SAT Ian Hislop enjoys nothing better than debunking myth, and SAT there's plenty of myth that has accrued around Henry, or as SAT the music-hall song had him 'our 'Enery'. But there's quite SAT a lot of truth as well, not about the King but about the SAT ages in which he was re-created. It seems that he and his SAT doings are a perennial story for 'our' times, whenever those SAT times might be. SAT But if the various images of Henry only serve to enlighten SAT us about other periods long after the Tudors should we SAT resort to the simple shock tactics of Alan Bennett's savvy SAT teacher in The History Boys and say 'for Henry VIII think SAT Stalin?' Who better to answer that than Alan Bennett himself SAT who joins Ian to create a sixth and, for our age, a final SAT image of Henry VIII. SAT Producer: Tom Alban. SAT SAT 08:00 Garrison Keillor's Radio Show b0186byz (Listen) SAT Series 7, Episode 9 SAT From New York City, the funny man welcomes mini-orchestra SAT Pink Martini and renowned operatic baritone Nathan Gunn. SAT From 2010. SAT SAT 09:00 4 Extra at Bletchley Park b03g8lxl (Listen) SAT Made for 4 Extra. Maggie Philbin traces the remarkable SAT history of IT through the BBC sound archives from the SAT birthplace of the world's first electronic computer, SAT Bletchley Park. SAT Maggie Philbin on Bletchley Park SAT Some things simply can't be counted as work and a trip to SAT Bletchley Park SAT in any circumstances is one of them. I hope this programme SAT which raids the BBC archive to see how we reported the story SAT of IT captures something of the atmosphere of the place. SAT Look out for the moment when we feel our way gingerly by SAT torchlight along a pigeon infested corridor in one deserted SAT building where so many clever heads combined to crack codes SAT and save thousands of lives during WW2. SAT The history of computing isn't just about room sized SAT computers shrinking to fit into the palm of your hand but SAT extraordinary men and women from SAT Ada Lovelace SAT to SAT Clive Sinclair SAT to SAT Tim Berners-Lee SAT and our attitude to their pioneering work at the time. SAT When I joined the BBC's Tomorrow's World team in the early SAT 1980's, there wasn't a single computer in the office. In SAT 1994 there were only 623 websites in the world. Today, along SAT with the internet, they have come to reshape the way we SAT live, work, communicate and play. I hope you enjoy this SAT special three-hour broadcast from Bletchley Park as much we SAT all enjoyed making it. SAT SAT The Enigma machine SAT The German military used the Enigma cipher machine during SAT World War 2 to keep their communications secret.
