Richard Wilson has SAT always said he'd never write one. SAT Based on glimmers of truth, Believe It is the hilarious, SAT bizarre, revealing (and, most importantly, untrue) celebrity SAT radiography of Richard Wilson. SAT He narrates the series, weaving in and out of dramatised SAT scenes from his fictional life-story. He plays a heavily SAT exaggerated version of himself: a Scots actor and national SAT treasure, unmarried, private, passionate about politics, SAT theatre and Manchester United (all true), who's a confidant SAT of the powerful and has survived childhood poverty, a SAT drunken father, years of fruitless grind, too much success, SAT monstrosity, addiction, charity work, secret work for SAT governments and fierce rivalry with Sean Connery (not true). SAT All the melodramatic staples of celebrity-autobiography are SAT wonderfully undercut by Richard's deadpan delivery. SAT (The title - in case you hadn't spotted - is an unashamed SAT reference to his famous catchphrase.) SAT Richard is supported by a small core cast: SAT David Tennant SAT John Sessions SAT Lewis Macleod SAT Arabella Weir SAT and Jane Slavin SAT who play anyone and everyone! MON At the heart of the village was the Saltaire Club and MON Institute that was set up "to supply the advantages of a MON public-house, but without the evils." Temperance developed MON from the 1830s as a movement of the skilled working classes, MON and in 1853 became organised as a formidable political MON pressure group - the UK Alliance. It argued for teetotalism, MON and for the right of ratepayers to ban the liquor trade in MON their own town. MON It had formidable parliamentary support. But it was hated by MON writers such as Charles Dickens, who ridiculed the idea that MON prohibition would create a more sober nation. The Times MON dismissed teetotallers as "intolerant brooding theorists". MON The issue came to a head in 1871-2. There was a General MON Election and Gladstone's Liberals were trying to pass a new MON Licensing Bill. The campaign was marred by violent MON confrontations between those who wanted more or less freedom MON to drink. Gladstone himself hoped to create a more MON continental drinking culture and reduced the duty on French MON wine. But he couldn't win. When he lost the next Election in MON 1874 he complained that he'd been "borne down in a torrent MON of gin and beer." TUE The action of A King's Speech takes place on Coronation Day, TUE 12th May 1937, and deals with King George VI's preparations TUE for his evening BBC Radio broadcast to the Nation - a TUE terrifying prospect for perhaps the most notable Briton to TUE have suffered from a stammer. TUE The Coronation Ceremony in Westminster Abbey completed, the TUE new King must face a further challenge - the dreaded royal TUE broadcast, to be delivered under the watchful gaze of the TUE BBC's first Director General, Sir John Reith himself. As the TUE tension mounts, speech therapist, Lionel Logue (played by TUE Trevor Littledale) must work hard to calm the King's nerves TUE and to prepare him for his ordeal at the microphone. No easy TUE task. As the King says himself, exploding in fury: TUE "Dammit!! I can't say 'crowned', can't say 'King'! What use TUE is that? The whole speech is a minefield of 'Commonwealths', TUE 'Queens' and 'Kings'! Five hundred and seventy-two words in TUE total, and most of them impossible for me to say!" TUE The central scenes of the play feature Logue and his pupil. TUE Comfortable in each other's company, they discuss the speech TUE the King must make in a few hours' time. Logue's working TUE methods are revealed: the tongue-twisters, breathing TUE exercises, Shakespearean quotations - all designed to relax TUE the speaker. The King's dependence on, and great friendship TUE with Logue becomes apparent. Their conversation is TUE wide-ranging, dealing with, among other things, the TUE Abdication Crisis; George VI's childhood - when being both TUE left-handed and a stammerer was frowned on; the King's envy TUE of his elder brother; and his uneasy relationship with his TUE father, King George V. TUE This is Mark Burgess's sixth play for BBC Radio 4, all of TUE which have dealt with prominent people at pivotal moments in TUE their lives. TUE TUE 14:15 Britain on the Bottle: Alcohol and the State TUE b00t1qpx (Listen) TUE Political Thinkers and the Drink Question TUE Mark Whitaker shows how the 'Drink Question' was of central TUE importance for both of England's most original and TUE influential political thinkers of the 19th century - John TUE Stuart Mill and TH Green. TUE For both of them it raised the question of how far the state TUE could be justified in interfering in the lives of TUE individuals. The debate had started in the letters page of TUE the Times in 1856, in a high-level exchange between the Tory TUE MP Lord Stanley and Samuel Pope, Secretary of the temperance TUE movement the UK Alliance. The latter argued that his rights TUE as a citizen were "invaded" by the behaviour of heavy TUE drinkers; the former that no Englishman would agree to be TUE "coerced for his own benefit". TUE Mill picked up the topic in his essay On Liberty, published TUE in 1859. Mill was mid-Victorian England's most influential TUE public intellectual, and his books were best-sellers even TUE though his ideas were radical. He insisted that "drunkenness TUE is not a fit subject for legislative purposes", and feared TUE that the weight of public opinion would crush individualism. TUE TH Green was an academic philosopher at Oxford, and was TUE deeply involved in the temperance movement during the 1870s. TUE He believed that individual freedom lay in pursuing the TUE common good and that mass drunkenness made this impossible TUE in England. He thought that "moderate drinkers" had to TUE sacrifice their pleasure for the sake of society as a whole. TUE Actors read extracts from their work. WED This was the time of pioneering social research by the likes WED of Booth and Rowntree, and also of a new belief in the WED ability of government to intervene to change social WED conditions. Allied to this was a growing medical confidence WED that addiction to alcohol was a disease that could be WED isolated and treated - and a new term was invented, WED 'inebriety'. WED Public and political opinion on the matter was hugely WED influenced by the publication by the Daily Telegraph in 1891 WED of a long series of letters giving first-hand accounts of WED alcohol addiction. They were revelatory, and the paper WED called them a "sad mirror of the National Sin". There was WED particular concern over the extent of female drunkenness, WED and this fed into fears about a deterioration of the WED 'national stock'. WED A leading medical figure argued that "the wide-spread WED prevalence of alcoholism among women, especially during the WED reproductive period of life, is one of the important factors WED making for racial decay". WED Such fears came to a head when many young men proved WED insufficiently healthy to fight in the Boer War. In 1898 WED Parliament passed an Inebriates Act that required local WED authorities to set up special 'reformatories' as an WED alternative to prison for those arrested time after time for WED being drunk and disorderly. Courts could sentence people to WED them for up to three years. The shift was from condemnation WED to cure: but the reformatories couldn't survive after the WED outbreak if war in 1914. THU THU 14:15 Britain on the Bottle: Alcohol and the State THU b00t3tb3 (Listen) THU The Central Control Board of 1915 THU "Drink is doing us more damage in the War than all the THU German submarines put together", insisted Lloyd George in THU February 1915. THU Continuing his history series on how British governments THU have approached the 'Drink Question', Mark Whitaker looks at THU the years of the First World War, when everything was THU determined by the needs of 'national efficiency'. THU After a few months of war it became clear that Britain THU needed to make more munitions - and fast. But output was THU slowed down by the workers' drinking habits. "We are THU fighting German, Austrians and Drink", said Lloyd George as THU he embarked on a plan for the government to buy up the THU country's whole liquor trade. THU But the Cabinet balked at the price. Instead a Central THU Control Board (CCB) was set up in 1915 with the power to THU take over the trade in areas of particular sensitivity to THU the war effort. The largest of these was Gretna-Carlisle, THU where a new national munitions factory was built. THU The number of licences was drastically reduced: the beer was THU weakened: the sale of spirits limited: and pubs encouraged THU to provide food as well as drink. Newspapers called it "the THU largest social experiment of our time". A Carlisle vicar THU called state control "the dawning of a new era". It worked THU too. Convictions for drunkenness in CCB-controlled areas THU declined dramatically, and many began to think that THU nationalisation might finally be the solution to the 'Drink THU Question'. FRI FRI 07:30 Believe It! b01hxmw4 (Listen) FRI Boots FRI Celebrity autobiographies are everywhere. Richard Wilson has FRI always said he'd never write one. FRI Based on glimmers of truth, Believe It is the hilarious, FRI bizarre, revealing (and, most importantly, untrue) celebrity FRI radiography of Richard Wilson. FRI He narrates the series, weaving in and out of dramatised FRI scenes from his fictional life-story. He plays a heavily FRI exaggerated version of himself: a Scots actor and national FRI treasure, unmarried, private, passionate about politics, FRI theatre and Manchester United (all true), who's a confidant FRI of the powerful and has survived childhood poverty, a FRI drunken father, years of fruitless grind, too much success, FRI monstrosity, addiction, charity work, secret work for FRI governments and fierce rivalry with Sean Connery (not true). FRI All the melodramatic staples of celebrity-autobiography are FRI wonderfully undercut by Richard's deadpan delivery. Meera Syal reads her own novel. FRI FRI 14:15 Britain on the Bottle: Alcohol and the State FRI b00t3tbw (Listen) FRI Improving the Pub FRI It seemed possible during the 1920s that the 'Drink FRI Question' that had bedevilled British governments for so FRI long might finally be about to be consigned to the past. FRI The fall in consumption - which had started during the First FRI World War - continued throughout the decade, and political FRI attention focused on why. This was when the Labour Party FRI formed its first governments, and there were powerful FRI socialist voices arguing for a full nationalisation of the FRI drinks industry. This could be a route to weaning the FRI working classes away from a product that was "a powerful FRI weapon in the hands of the exploiters". George Bernard Shaw FRI called liquor "a chloroform that allows the poor to endure FRI the painful operation of living". FRI But while governments chose to sit on the fence during the FRI 1920s, the brewing industry got busy. Led by people like FRI Ernest Nevile, the head of Whitbread's, they set about FRI designing and building a new type of pub - one that would FRI attract a new middle class clientele. "The presence in FRI public houses of people who will not tolerate insobriety FRI makes excess unfashionable". FRI What were called 'improved pubs' - huge buildings with bars, FRI restaurants, ball rooms, bowling greens and even tennis FRI courts - sprung up in the new suburbs. When Nevile said "if FRI I can cure drunkenness in the country in my time, that will FRI satisfy me" he was talking business, not morality. FRI The programme also looks at the first attempts at a FRI sociology of the pub, and what people wanted from it. FRI Producer: Mark Whitaker FRI A Square Dog production for BBC Radio 4.
